The ADHD Hunter

Focus, Instinct, and the Pursuit of Elk

Plain answerThe ADHD Hunter is the first book in Jeremy Criddle’s ADHD Hunter & Runner series. It begins with a lived question: why can a brain that struggles to hold a meeting stay locked onto tracks, wind, terrain, and animal movement for hours?

Most ADHD books begin indoors

This one begins in elk country. Jeremy grew up hunting squirrel and deer in Mississippi and later pursued mule deer and elk in the West. The book follows his late recognition that the attention he experienced in the field did not resemble the attention problems he knew at a desk.

The reframe

Restlessness, novelty seeking, rapid environmental scanning, and intense focus can feel useful in dynamic environments. The book uses hunting to examine that mismatch without claiming ADHD is costless, universally advantageous, or explained by one evolutionary story.

Evidence checkNIMH: ADHD in adults
ADHD is a developmental disorder involving persistent inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity that interferes across areas of life. Diagnosis and effective treatment belong with qualified care.

The hunter-gatherer idea—with the boundary intact

The hunter-versus-farmer hypothesis is a compelling interpretive model, not an established explanation for ADHD. Recent foraging research has found an association between elevated ADHD screening scores and earlier patch-leaving in a computer task. That is interesting evidence about exploratory behavior—not proof that ADHD is “the hunter gene.”

Evidence checkAttention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
In a preregistered online task, participants with positive ADHD screens left resource patches sooner. The study tested foraging decisions; it did not validate every claim of the hunter-versus-farmer hypothesis.

Where it leads

The ADHD Runner carries the story from the field to deliberate movement. Read the evidence boundary when the evolutionary claim is your main question.
