Race Overview
The HURT 100 mile endurance run stands as the most technically challenging and mentally demanding 100-mile trail race in America, featuring a brutal 5-loop course through Hawaii’s tropical rainforests on the island of Oahu. Established in 1995 by the Hawaii Ultra Running Team (HURT), this legendary race takes place each January in the Ko’olau Mountains, where runners face over 24,400 feet of elevation gain across treacherous terrain that includes slippery mud, exposed roots, stream crossings, and dense jungle vegetation.
What makes HURT unique among 100-mile races is its unforgiving tropical conditions and technical difficulty that challenges even the most experienced ultrarunners. The 20-mile loop course begins and ends at Nature Center, taking runners through Manoa Falls Trail, Makiki Loop, Tantalus, and back through some of the most demanding single track terrain in the world. With finish rates often below 40%, HURT has earned its reputation as the most difficult 100-mile race to complete in the United States.
The race attracts only the most experienced and determined ultrarunners seeking the ultimate test of mental toughness and technical trail running skills. Weather conditions can range from blazing tropical heat and humidity to torrential downpours that turn the already slippery trails into dangerous mudslides. Navigation skills are essential, as the dense jungle canopy and numerous trail intersections create constant challenges for runners. HURT’s January timing coincides with Hawaii’s wet season, virtually guaranteeing challenging conditions that test every aspect of ultrarunning preparation and mental fortitude.
How to Qualify & Enter
Entry to the HURT 100 is highly selective and requires meeting stringent qualifying standards that reflect the race’s extreme difficulty. The race typically accepts only 135 runners total, making it one of the most exclusive 100-mile events in the world.
Qualifying Standards:
• Complete a 100-mile ultramarathon within the past 4 years
• Complete multiple 50-mile ultramarathons with strong finishing times
• Demonstrate extensive technical trail running experience
• Previous HURT 100 experience strongly preferred
• Invitation-only basis for first-time applicants
Application Process:
Applications typically open in late summer through the HURT website with a thorough vetting process. Applicants must submit detailed ultrarunning resume, race history, and statement of experience with technical trail conditions. The race directors personally review each application and select runners based on experience level and preparedness for the extreme conditions.
Entry fee is approximately $150, significantly lower than most 100-mile races due to the minimal race infrastructure and volunteer-driven organization. International runners are welcome but must demonstrate exceptional qualifications and understanding of the course demands. Wait-list runners may be offered spots closer to race day as withdrawals occur.
Course Layout
